Document #1 - Bishop fulbert of chartes statement on mutual feudal obligations between lord & vassal 1020
Why do you think that it was important for the lord to act "reciprocally" to his vassal? In your own words, sum up what a vassal is to do for his lord.
It is important for the lord to act reciprocally towards the vassal so that their relations could stay peaceful and fair. A vassal has to be loyal to their lord, and not do anything to hurt or disobey them in anyway. vassals and the lords had to work together to keep the manor a self-sufficient place.
was feudal society an equal society?
no a feudal society was an unequal society because there were multiple levels of social classes. For example, first came the pope and church, then the monarchy, nobles, knights, vassals, merchants, farmers, craftsmen, peasants and finally serfs.
This document was an important contribution to our title "a feudal society" because it helps show the relationship between the lord and the vassal. this relationship shows that there were different social classes that depended on one another to survive which leads to the creation of what our title was, "A feudal society."

Document #3 - Excerpt of the magna carta 1215
Explain the obligations that John of Cayworth owes his lord and vice versa. This document is titled to be a manorial contract, how does it differ from the feudal obligation document (#1)?
- John must pay the lord 2 shillings a year at Easter and Michealmas.
- At christmas, john must give the lord 1 cock and 2 hens worth 4 shillings.
- John must cultivate the lord's land 2 days during Lent at sowing time with his own horse harrow.
- Must carry manure of lord's animals for 2 days with his own 2 oxen.
- Can't allow the daughters to marry without consent of the lord or lord's bailiff.
- Can't let sons enter clergy without the lord's consent.
- Can't cut timber on his own land (meant only for building) without the consent of the lord or bailiff.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
- the lord must give john one house and 30 acres of land
- the lord must give john 3 meals a day that he harrows or carries manure
This document contributed to the selection of our title because it shows how the lord and the vassal work together to make the manor a sufficient home. this is shown with the rules and regulations in the contract that each of them must follow. For example, because the vassal takes care of the house the lord must provide him with 3 meals a day. this shows that the two of them work as a team to help contribute to the formation of "a feudal society"

Document #4 - A medieval manor
How is a manor self sufficient? Why was this self-sufficieuncy important following the fall of the Roman Empire?
The Manor was self-sufficient because....
- Serfs cultivated the land
- They kept a portion for themselves, and the rest went to the lord
- Tended to animals and gave some of them to the lord
- The lord provided shelter and land
- The manor could survive by itself because the lord and vassals swear to be faithful to one another.
- After the lords death, the sons and daughters or the vassal will pay the lord the best animal they have, unless he doesn't have any animals in which the lord would receive no payment
- If the sons and daughters of the vassal wish to continue living in the house and on the land after his death, they must give a payment that is equal to an entire years rent, and then continue paying the rent as set in the contract
The manorial contract differs from the feudal obligation document, because the feudal obligations are about how the lord and vassal must be faithful to each other, where as the manorial contract is all about financial obligations (also answer to document #3).
THis was important to the fall of the roman empire because the manor needed to be able to survive if the society collapsed.
This document helped contribute to the decision of our title, "a feudal society" because it led us to understand that even after the vassal passed away there was still a connection between the lord AND HIS PROPERTY. FOR EXAMPLE if the vassal passed away there is still able to be a connection between the vassals children and the lord to keep the feudal society from dyeing out. everyone had their roles in the manor to help develop the result of "A feudal society"
